Why Derrick Lewis Deserves More Love
Jason da Silva-USA TODAY Sports

Derrick Lewis (27-12, 1 NC) has made a living as one of the more recognizable names in the UFC. He’s also made himself an extremely likable personality, with fans warming up to the Houston native.

For example, he expressed his passion for quality furniture with the owner of Houston-based Gallery Furniture, “Mattress Mack.” Nothing screams “comedy” like a straight-faced Lewis in a commercial with a man who loses $12 million betting on an Astros World Series win in 2019.

But there’s more to Lewis than meets the eye. After all, he has an upcoming fight in St. Louis this Saturday against Rodrigo Nascimento. Therefore, let’s examine why the Houston native deserves more love as a UFC heavyweight.

Derrick Lewis is a knockout master

Derrick Lewis has plenty of power in his overwhelming strikes. How much? He has 14 stoppage victories during his tenure in the UFC heavyweight division. That’s the most in divisional history and tied for sixth-most in the promotion, making him a dangerous fighter.

On top of that, he has 14 victories via knockouts, the most in company history. Whenever Lewis gets a hold of his opponent, he’s not afraid to unload on them. That includes his potent ground-and-pound game, which is responsible for eight of his knockouts (tied for the most in company history with Cain Velasquez.

Nobody knows how to set records and blaze trails like Lewis does. He’s a natural powerhouse who can overwhelm his opponents with powerful punches. Fans (and society) love an absolute unit, which is what the 39-year-old is.

Lewis is a great performer

Aside from his deadly punches, Derrick Lewis also knows how to have an incredible fight. He’s won the honor of “Performance of the Night” five times during his career, after all. He also has the honor of earning “Fight of the Night” three times during his career.

His eight post-fight bonuses are tied for the most in the UFC heavyweight division all-time with Stefan Struve. Fans should watch Lewis not only for him making history but to get an incredible show.

Saturday in St. Louis will be an electric main event between Rodrigo Nascimento and Derrick Lewis. Nascimento is no walkover, sitting pretty at a record of (11-1, 1 NC), while Lewis is 1-4 in his last five fights. However, fans should tune in to see the Houston native compete. Who knows? He might deliver yet another knockout.
